Stadt_Land_Schloss brings cultural history between the Friedenstein castle in Gotha and its surrounding villages alive. What are the links between the castle and the villages? Who cares for local cultural heritage, and how and why?

In cooperation with the Friedenstein foundation of the Gotha castle and its rich cultural heritage branching into many parts of (European and colonial) history, we connect the castle with the villages and its social networks. Through workshops, mini festivals and artistic creation around local cultural heritage, we make history tangible and highlight the effort and knowledge of organisations and people that keep its record. From the city to the village back to the castle!

2025:
Who actually cut the beams for the Friedenstein castle? What puppet (hi)story does Catterfeld tell? And what spiritual heritage travelled from Wangenheim as far as Korea?
Answers to these questions and many more peculiar stories around cultural heritage were shared during our village tour in the form of audio stories and a pop-up exhibition.

Museum culture goes on tour and the castle meets its roots and relations in the surrounding villages around Gotha and the Thüringer Wald. Why do people get involved for cultura heritage, and how does local history become relevant for us today – be in it the museum, the ongoing village chronicles or local members associations?
In cooperation with local organisations, artists, musicians, nature activists and many more local actors we created a colourful summer program full of workshops, events, historically informed food and platforms for local networking. Check out the program in the flyer and pictures below!
2026:
This year, we dive into historically informed partying! How did one dance at the court, and what food was served at a village feast? How many pots are needed to traditionally serve a festive supper and what are the joyful parts of a parade in the Thüringer woods?
In creative workshops we create flags, banners and festive decorations for local festivities around the village museums and the Friedenstein castle. We come together for banquets, historically informed snacks and crafting, share interesting information from the regions history and collect oral histories on local festivities in the past and today. Join us on the journey!
